Newsletter 66 : 11 april 2012

>  Subscribe to the newsletter

Greetings
Welcome to our newsletter.  You’ve received it because either you requested it (extra thanks!) or Kay or Jeremy have met you on our travels.  Should you not wish to receive it, please accept our apologies for troubling you and simply respond to this email with the word ‘unsubscribe’ in the subject line.

We offer a change from other newsletters which do demand an awful lot of reading, and hope you will find it diverting.

Emotional intelligence article of the week

How do great bosses distinguish themselves from others?  Jeff Haden‘s ideas.

Video of the week

Marco Tempest spins a story of what magic is, how it entertains us and how it highlights our humanity—all while performing tricks with his hands and an augmented reality machine. (dur 6:32)

 Increasing compassionate care

Nurses are getting a lot of stick from politicians and the media for a supposed lack of compassion.  The premise of our programme, Increasing compassionate care, is that healthcare staff in hospitals are intrinsically compassionate.  But they find their capacity to express compassion is compromised by a variety of factors.   The programme is intended for all staff who have direct contact with patients and their relatives and the focus is as much on avoiding the problems of compassion fatigue and burnout as it is on dealing with them should they arise.  The primary outcome is a higher level of care experienced by the patient.

Haunting song of the week

Anna Maria Jopek and Pat Metheny:  sheer magic (dur: 3:34)

Birthday quotations of the week

—I learned that it is the weak who are cruel, and that gentleness is to be expected only from the strong.

—Truth is stranger than fiction; fiction has to make sense.

Leo Rosten, American humorist, b 11 April 1908

Emotional intelligence test of the week

How likeable are you?  Try this test for your amusement (we neither endorse it, nor disparage it).

Jigsaw of the week

9 mins is the target to go for.

Extra birthday quotation of the week

—For I will consider my Cat Jeoffry…
For he is a mixture of gravity and waggery.

Christopher Smart, poet, b 11 april 1722

All contributions welcome.
(Thanks this week to Sue Cohen.)

If you have been, thank you for reading.
